FAQ

·         Do I have to make a decision right now?

No.  Only members of the class of 2011 who wish the school to purchase their phone for them have a deadline on opting in to this program.  Everyone else may opt in at any time, or not at all.

·         I’ve read everything on the website, can I get more information?

Yes.  There will be an instructional session Monday, 11/17/2008 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Kornhauser Library Auditorium.  Brad Johnson from Sprint will be available to take any questions.  There will be an additional Q&A Monday from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. in the Instructional Building, first floor auditorium.

·         How long am I locked in to the plan?

1 year.

·         What happens when I graduate?

Sprint will offer you the opportunity to select a new Sprint service plan. Once Sprint is notified by University that you are (or will soon be) ineligible for the Sprint Campus Connect Program, Sprint will contact you and offer an opportunity to migrate Service to a standard consumer Service plan. Any migration to your own account is subject to Sprint consumer credit qualifications. You will have complete financial responsibility for the Service you select and will pay Sprint directly for Service. In most cases, you will be able to keep your existing Product and related phone number under the new Service plan. If you do not select a new Service plan, Sprint will terminate your Service on or about the first day of the first bill cycle after Sprint receives notice from the University that you are no longer eligible for the Sprint Campus Connect Program.

·         I heard the class of 2011 is getting a free phone.  Why don’t I get a free phone?

The School of Medicine, with input from Student Leadership, has decided to focus the limited technology funds available to other projects to benefit student learning.  We are focusing on infrastructure to support mobile devices, negotiating attractive billing plans like the one offered by Sprint and the acquisition of the applications determined valuable to medical students.  Additionally, we have transitioned funds to support projects like the Unit Lab upgrades and the support of Tegrity and other initiatives.  If you are in the class of 2009 or 2010, the School already purchased a Dell Axim for you.  The class of 2011 was the last class that was promised a PDA upon admission, so that promise will be honored.

·         Which Phones may I choose?

You may choose any cell phone Sprint sells.  However, the following are recommended by the School of Medicine Office of Technology, as they have been tested with the applications we support:

Treo 800W (click here for details)

HTC Touch Pro (click here for details)

HTC Diamond Touch (click here for details)

·         Why aren’t you recommending the iPhone?

The iPhone is not carried by Sprint, and is therefore not able to be put on the Sprint contract that the School of Medicine has negotiated with Sprint.  The iPhone, while a very cool piece of technology, does not currently run the full versions of all of the core applications that the School of Medicine provides.  It runs a basic version of Epocrates RX, but does not have the diagnostics and other products included in the full pro version available for the Windows Mobile platform.  There is not an Epocrates Steadman’s Medical Dictionary program for the iPhone.  The New Innovations Encounter Log client will not run on the iPhone.  While it is possible to get your email on an iPhone, you cannot keep your calendar, contacts and tasks synchronized with GroupWise.

·         I’m going to buy an iPhone anyway.  Will you help me?

Yes, we will give “best effort” support in helping you get the most functionality out of any mobile device that you bring us.

·         Why aren’t you recommending a Blackberry?

Blackberrys do not run the Medical applications provided by the School of Medicine.  Additionally, in order to get a Blackberry to receive your GroupWise email or to sync your calendar, contacts and tasks, you have to purchase a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Client Access License from I.T. for $83.50

·         I’m going to buy a Blackberry anyway.  Will you help me?

Yes, we will give “best effort” support in helping you get the most functionality out of any mobile device that you bring us.

·         Can I add my spouse to this plan?

No.  The contract negotiated with Sprint only covers full time MD or MD/PHD students.

·         Can I have two phones in my name on this plan at a time?

Sorry, no.

·         What are the applications that are provided by the Medical School?

Epocrates Pro, the complete version, Epocrates Steadman’s Medical Dictionary, New Innovations encounter tracking software, and Intellisync Mobile, for accessing your email and wirelessly syncing your calendar, contacts and tasks with GroupWise.
